The Shestopalov laboratory is focused on cell-cell communication pathways in the eye. A complex homeostatic network of interactions between glial cells, neurons and inflammatory cells in the retina and between fiber cells in the lens become severely affected by pathological processes. We explore the paradigm that restoration of homeostatic signaling pathways and networks minimizes damage and facilitates recovery of affected cells and tissues. We detect such essential pathways using modern molecular, functional genomics and bioinformatics approaches and utilize this knowledge to develop therapeutic strategies that block and reverse pathological abnormalities.
